During the Dark Hour people and things changed... Most normal people transformed into coffins, however not everyone did. [ you can see where things are going... ] If people didn't automatically get killed by the Shadows then there was a chance that they would become one themselves.
Have normal people tried it? Going into the Metaverse, that is.

They're different from what I've seen too. Most transformations I'm familiar with, the person ends up dying afterwards as a result of it.
